Civilopedia entry[]
If a ballista is a massive bow made for siege warfare, the catapult is the equivalent for a sling. The term “catapult” is fairly general, and the classic image of a bowl mounted on the edge of a long arm to fling rocks, made famous in the early Middle Ages, might more specifically be called an onager or mangonel. The onager relied on potential energy stored in a bent wooden plank, whereas the mangonel used a system of cords for propulsion. The general purpose was the same for both: throw heavy things a long way. The mangonel likely originated in China before the Han Dynasty, and the onager in Rome during the 3rd century CE; both could hurl a rock roughly 400 feet, demolishing walls, ships…and the people inside.
