Civilopedia entry[]

In 1519 AD, Hernán Cortés led the first Spanish invasion of the Aztec Empire. With him traveled Gerónimo de Aguilar, a Catholic priest. Conversion and conquest came together, blending indigenous ways with Christian imports (a syncretism that is reflected in the centuries before the Spanish – the Aztecs, when they began their conquest, brought their own deity, Huitzilopochtli, and elevated him in local pantheons).

Catholicism remained important in Mexican history, and, given its history, it is little surprise that new forms of devotion and worship occasionally emerge. The Catedral Metropolitana in Mexico City was built atop the Aztec ceremonial center near the temple of Huēyi Teōcalli, directly symbolizing the substitution of the Christian god for the Aztec ones. The Basilica of Guadalupe is most crucial to Mexican Catholicism; it was built on a site where the Virgin Mary appeared to an Aztec convert and demanded a cathedral. This apparition is the Virgin of Guadalupe – an aspect of the Virgin Mary that embodies both the indigenous and European heritage of Mexico and is the patron saint of Mexico.
