Civilopedia entry[]

"Mongol hordes" call to mind a sweeping mass of horse archers stretched across the Eurasian steppe. However the Mongols – referring to Kublai Khan’s Yuan Dynasty in China – also attempted a takeover of Java in 1293 CE, which set the stage for the rise of the Majapahit Empire. This invasion failed thanks to naval treachery, but Java kept the Mongols' guns after the invaders left. The cetbang was a light cannon with one or two barrels, and was mounted onto a swivel, giving it a remarkably modern appearance – the same year that the Majapahit were using double-barreled swivel cannons, the English and French were still contesting over the superiority of longbows or crossbows.

The cetbang did not have the power of later bombards, and could not productively be used against enemy ships, but they still had their uses. At the time, navies were essentially floating platforms to carry warriors, so a volley of cetbang fire onto an enemy’s crowded decks could cause a great deal of damage, even before the first keris (Javanese dagger) was drawn.
