Civilopedia entry[]
During the medieval and early modern periods, a Siamese war elephant (a yuthahathi) was a royal steed, intended to carry knights and lords into pike duels with other kings. However, after the advent of guns, the elephant became a tank. Rather than using the archaic term “yuthahathi,” we have translated “machine gun elephant” as simply “gun [carrying] elephant,” or “chang beun.”
Howdah-mounted swivel guns, weighing 50-100kg, were a feature of the Thai/Burmese wars of the early modern era. Elephants retained some advantage over motorized tanks, as they could move more quietly through jungle and across rivers. These massive animals could also withstand bullets that horses and other living mounts could not. As such, they were deployed in conflicts that required mobility across difficult terrain, such as the Haw Wars (1865-1890).
