Civilopedia entry[]

When we speak of colonialism, we often phrase the era as the conquest of one region by a power in another, with an ideology of superiority and with the purposes of extraction. But this is only partially true: colonial ventures were largely semi-private business ventures, established by a company that had been incorporated and given a charter by the crown. This focus on trade and profits underlines the purposes of such institutions – as opposed to direct imperial conquest, these ventures were established to make money.

The East India Company, perhaps the most famous of the English chartered companies, was established well before the modern period. But as the EIC and other companies continued their operations, their monopolistic stance and rapacious practices (and the resistance that they brought about) caused the Crown to intervene, and the chartered companies of the modern era were more limited in scope, and subject to more intervention on the part of the state.
