The Chasqui is a unique civilian unit unit of the Incan civilization in Civilization VII. It replaces the Scout.

• Attributes:
  • Ignores Movement penalties from rough, vegetated, and wet tiles.
  • Ignores view obstruction from Mountains.
  • Has increased Movement (4 vs. 2).
  • Has increased Sight (4 vs. 2).
• Actions:
  • Lookout: The Chasqui gains +1 Sight, removes view obstruction from Vegetation, and is put to Sleep.
  • Search: The Chasqui gains +1 Sight for 1 turn, removes view obstruction from Vegetation, and reveals Discoveries within twice the Sight range.

The immense Qhapaq Nan, the Incan road network, snaked through the Andes, uniting the high-altitude empire. Without horses or wheels, navigating these paths and bridges required walking – or running. The masters of the Qhapaq Nan were the chasquis, messengers chosen from the strongest of the young Incan men. They relayed messages through a system of tambos, or cabins, built along the roads. When a chasqui approached a tambo, a fresh runner would come out to briefly accompany him. The new arrival relayed the message he carried before stopping to rest while his replacement, having memorized the communication, continued the journey. Using this method, information could travel up to 200 miles a day.

The chasquis also maintained a system of bonfires in case of serious emergencies. Each tambo could light a fire in the event of an invasion or a rebellion and the smoke would alert other chasquis to light their fires until the alarm reached the capital. The Sapa Inca immediately acted upon seeing the bonfires, embarking with his army even before knowing the exact nature of the threat.
