How do you use Chengde Mountain Resort? |
Civilopedia Entry[]
While the Forbidden City was the winter residence of the Qing Emperors, Chengde was the summer residence. The mountain resort fulfilled the same function – a large collection of administrative buildings built around royal dwellings. Chengde remains unique thanks to the special cultivation of its surrounding landscape. Each imperial temple was built in the style of one of China’s ethnic minorities, reinforcing a notion that China was not merely a state for the Han ethnicity (indeed, the Manchu Qing rulers would not have allowed this); rather it was a collection of peoples united under a single crown. Expert gardeners followed the landscape, ensuring their work did not overwrite the topography but enhanced it in ways informed by Chinese feng shui traditions, especially regarding the Danxia landscape (the red earth and steep cliffs) where Chengde is situated.
Trivia[]
- The Chengde Mountain Resort's wonder quote comes from the poem Climbing Green-Cliff Mountain in Yung-chia by Chinese poet and politician Xie Lingyun, considered the progenitor of Chinese landscape poetry.
