Civilopedia entry[]
The classic knight of the Middle Ages, the Norman chevaler was a noble who accepted temporary military service in exchange for a grant of land and serfs. The Norman knight was often equipped with a horse, shield, lance, sword, and hauberk (a shirt of chainmail) – the era of full plate had not yet arrived. In battle, these chevalers were the medieval equivalent of tanks – heavily armored and mobile – and they were capable of inflicting a devastating lance charge against less-armored and less-trained foot soldiers. This is a potent metaphor for status in the Middle Ages: the elite could enter a battle protected (especially after a papal ban on crossbows), whereas serfs had to rely upon wits...or luck. In the chevaler, status, duty, land, and violence came together, both on and off the battlefield.
