Chopping is a unit command in Civilization IV and its expansions. Workers gain the ability to clear forests and jungles from tiles upon the discovery of Bronze Working and Iron Working (respectively).
In addition to removing the forest and allowing more useful improvements on the tile (such as Cottages, Farms, or Mines), the clearing of the tile provides a yield of Production to a nearby city. A wood chop is useful for rushing the production of the city with an immediate boost towards whatever it's building. The clearing of jungle, however, yields no additional Production like forests; it merely improves the yield of the tile with additional Food.
The total amount provided is modified by whatever productivity modifiers the city enjoys, so a city with a Forge will get an additional 25% out of a nearby woodchop. A city building a Heroic Epic with access to Marble will get double Production from the same woodchop due to this bonus.
Woodchop yields[]
- Standard yield (on Normal speed): 20
- Mathematics increases the yield by 50%: 30
Woodchops that take place outside of cultural boundaries only provide half as much.
