Civilopedia entry[]
The power of the Assyrian Empire lay in its centralization, which occurred on a scale that had not been seen before in history. The system of governance hinged on a single king whose word was law – it was not unusual for royal demands sent to even the most powerful governors to end with a threat of death, and perhaps that of the governor’s family, should he fail to deliver by the requested date. This kind of tight control was made possible through several factors of organization, including communication infrastructure, a highly trained standing army, the dispersal of opposition through population relocation, and the distribution of provincial authority. But all of it stemmed from the core, run from the king’s citadel at the heart of his capital.
