Civilopedia entry[]
Citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons as well as the less familiar (but no less delicious) yuzu and pomelo, are a variety of fruit native to Southeast Asia. Quickly adopted as an early cultivar, citrus fruits expanded in human hands to East Asia and westward along trade routes through Islamic lands to the Mediterranean in the 900s and to Europe in the 1400s, where they were freely cultivated in the warmer regions of the continent. Beyond being a popular food, citrus fruits were discovered to be a necessary staple for sea travel. Vitamin C deficiency – scurvy – plagued many in the premodern world but was especially rampant among sailors. Subsisting on a diet of salted meat over long voyages, sailors lacked the vitamin C intake they normally received from a more varied, land-based diet (e.g. eating animal organs, green plants, etc.). Citrus fruits (especially limes) are an excellent source of the nutrient, and proved to be a quick fix for the disease, preventing the worst of the losses from scurvy, which could wipe out a sizeable percentage of any long-distance crew.
