Each Civilization game features playable historic nations, empires, and cultural groups known as civilizations (or "civs" for short). The number of playable civs differs with each game.

Table of Civilizations by game appearance

This table only includes civilizations in the base version of these games. Civilization II and Call to Power II have several scenarios with many non-traditional civilizations not found on this list. Moreover, most Civilization games let players rename the civilization one plays as to whatever a player chooses.
