The Clibanarii is a unique unit from the Fall of Rome scenario in Civilization V: Gods & Kings.
Game Info[]
Unique mounted unit of the Sassanid civilization. Replaces the Horseman. Requires Horses.
- Common abilities:
- Can Move After Attacking
- Special traits:
- Higher Combat Strength (16 vs. 12)
- Blitz promotion
- No Penalty Attacking Cities
- Lower Movement (3 vs. 4)
Strategy[]
While the Clibanarii's Combat Strength, defensive ability, and efficiency against cities are higher than that of the Horseman it replaces, it cannot move as far. As a mounted unit, it is vulnerable to attacks by Spearmen, Pikemen, and the like. It starts with the Blitz promotion, allowing it to attack twice in the same turn, and like other mounted units, it can move after attacking.
Civilopedia entry[]
The Clibanarii were the Sassanid equivalent of the Byzantine cataphracti, although more heavily armored. Both the horse and the riders themselves were fully encased in iron mail, and were used in battle in wedges to shatter enemy infantry and archer formations. The Sassanids employed the Clibanarii primarily in their western armies, mainly against the Eastern Roman empire's forces which were more likely to engage in pitched battles than the barbarian tribesmen along the northern and eastern borders.
