Coal is the result of plant matter from hundreds of millions of years ago that was compressed into peat and then buried deep in the earth. Once excavated, this compressed carbon burns hot and relatively long, making it useful for smelting. Because it was difficult to find (compared to wood), coal did not become a fuel of choice for many until the Industrial Revolution, when forests had fallen across England and populations were more concentrated. Coal fueled the “dark Satanic mills” of Blake’s imagination – the halls of English industry. It drove the steam engines that ran factory equipment, heated the homes of those who maintained those machines, and powered the railroads that took their products to market. And coal smoke blotted out the skies, producing the pollution euphemistically termed “London fog." Coal, the most polluting fossil fuel, is still a popular power source in many parts of the world, and continues to leave an imprint on our atmosphere.
