Civilopedia entry[]

Coffee is native to the northern part of the Rift Valley, in present-day Ethiopia. It remained a local curiosity until its discovery by Arab merchants during the Middle Ages, when it was exported to Yemen; it got its present-day name from Arabic (via Turkish). To this day, “Turkish” coffee – ground into a fine powder – remains a hallmark of the country, and like tea in East Asia, coffee’s stimulating properties were used by religious mystics to increase concentration during long periods of repetitive action. Others found it stimulating as well – coffee was introduced to Europe during the Ottoman Empire’s expansion. While the British grew tea in bulk in their Indian lands, the Dutch focused on coffee cultivation in Indonesia, and the Spanish in Colombia.

Coffee houses, in Europe and its colonies, became sites of conversation and academic debate, earning the name “penny universities” for their mass-marketed lectures and semi-academic environments – even providing an alternative to beer (Friedrich the Great famously derided coffee salons as degenerate, and lauded beer as the only beverage of choice for his men). Over time, coffee and capitalism went hand-in-hand – it only made sense that a beverage allowing people to work harder and longer would be made readily available for employees at offices, or game studios.
