Civilopedia entry[]

In the Middle Ages, trade routes dominated by the Hanseatic League crossed the Baltic and North Seas (and cautiously delved into the Atlantic Ocean). Their ship of choice was the cog, a slightly rounded, single-masted oak vessel that first made an appearance around 1000 CE. The cog had a sophisticated rudder and raised area for the crew, meaning its interior could be used effectively for cargo. Cogs took longer to construct than southern vessels but could be crewed by fewer people, leaving even more room for goods. In East Asia, Chinese builders worked on similar flat-bottomed models, though these featured more masts and lacked the distinctive “clinker” (overlapping) style of the cog. Tang and Song vessels moved around East and Southeast Asia – no less treacherous waters than the Atlantic!
