Civilopedia entry[]
The eras after the 16th century have come to be defined, worldwide, by colonial systems of control. In short, colonialism is an imperial power's attempt to establish outposts around the world for the purpose of extracting local resources. This usually involved either the replacement of the original inhabitants (often grisly business) or their ideological and cultural assimilation. This assimilation was never equal – colonial subjects were not considered metropolitan subjects. This division between colonized and non-colonized created the framework upon which present-day concepts like race were constructed.
Colonization features a few distinct phases – an early one, where powerful companies seized foreign land and assets to fuel trade and extraction, leaving “unproductive” areas largely untouched (aside from the imposition of Christianity). In late colonization, metropoles took direct control, managing and regulating the population. Settler colonies varied greatly, but the indigenous populations were often displaced, killed, or replaced by metropolitan inhabitants.
