Strategy

The Colosseum increases a civilization's Happiness by 2. It cannot provide more Happiness than there are Citizens in a city. It's a good source of Happiness if you don't have many luxury resources around.

You need a Colosseum to build a Theatre (in vanilla Civilization V and Gods and Kings) or a Zoo (in Brave New World). You need a Colosseum in each city to build Circus Maximus.

A colosseum is an outdoor venue where the public can watch sports events. Depending upon the time and place, the events might be gladiatorial contests, American football games, or soccer matches. Of the three contests mentioned, the gladiatorial battles were perhaps the hardest on the players involved, the soccer matches (occasionally) just about as dangerous for the participants.
