Civilopedia entry[]

“Those who are about to die salute you!” was the rallying call of the gladiators competing in the Roman Colosseum, which remains the largest standing amphitheater in the world today. On this stage, the sport of the ancient Romans was on full display. These could be gruesome affairs, often including duels to the death or battles between wild animals such as lions (Roman gladiatorial contests have been cited as the reason lions went extinct in the Mediterranean, although a shifting climate and expanding human population might have had more to do with it). But the Colosseum was an arena for more than just deadly spectacle, hosting public addresses, executions, plays, and sea battles that required the complex’s floor to be filled with water.

Gladiatorial contests were often staged between fighters armed with different weapons from around the Empire. For instance, the Samnite fighters had a long shield and a sharp Roman soldier’s sword (the gladius), Thracians held a short dagger and shield, and the Retiarii had a net and trident. Competitors were not armed in ways that made the most sense, but for whatever made the best sport.

The Colosseum was a place where the emperor and the populace could be together at the same time. As such, it was an important site in the politics of empire, especially when the senate dwindled in influence and importance.

Trivia[]

  • The Colosseum's wonder quote is part of a prophecy attributed to Bede, a medieval English monk, historian and scholar, found in the Collectanea satis copiosa, a collection of scriptural, historical, and patristic texts compiled by Henry VIII.
