Civilopedia entry[]
Consider the life of an ancient merchant, selling goods to fulfill a need at one end and making a profit on the other while often moving goods from areas that pay less toward areas that will pay more. This was an important part of life since before recorded history. Indeed, one of the first written texts is a complaint from a man, Nanni, about a merchant named Ea-Nasir who sold poor-quality copper and treated his customers rudely when they complained (in a testament to Ea-Nasir’s awful personality, this record was found in the ruins of his own home, meaning that he saved the complaint for some reason).
This is trade. But commerce requires infrastructure – roads, warehouses, safehouses, logistics, et cetera. The caravanserai, for instance, was a wayside inn in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia where merchants could rest, with their cargo secure, during a long journey. The Mongol Empire granted passports to merchants traveling through its lands, as a means of verification, protection, and regulation. Commerce involves thinking systematically about trade – not as something that people habitually do, but as an institution.
