Civilopedia entry[]

According to Karl Marx, economies contain contradictions that, in their resolution, push history forward. For instance, in feudal societies the rising urban artisans and merchants would eventually realize aristocracy was nothing more than fancy titles on an outmoded economic model and move toward its overthrow. The bourgeoisie – people with money and no titles – eventually set up a capitalistic system, but this featured its own contradictions: organizations only yield a profit if the wages they pay are less than the labor is worth. For Marx, the working class would eventually realize that they were being exploited, and seize the factories and machines – the means of production – for themselves. Then those who worked would have control over their labor, and communism would be realized.

Thus, communism is both a political and an economic system, but Marx never saw it realized. While communist systems have, historically, flickered in and out, the Russian Revolution that led to the Soviet Union was the first major successful communist revolution. While Marx envisioned a society without the aristocracy or bourgeoisie, the Soviets and later communist states saw their revolution as unfinished, requiring a formalized Communist Party to educate and lead the masses (and stave off counter-revolutions from abroad). This party-led Leninism gave way to other varieties of communism: Trotskyism (a union of workers from every nation, eventually ignoring and surpassing borders), Stalinism (a nationally-focused ideology centered on a particular nation and leader), and others. Various communist states today embrace different variations of these philosophies, and communist parties in multi-party states focus on workers’ rights and unionization.
