Theorized by German philosopher Karl Marx, Communism was a system free of classes. By putting the means of production - factories, farms and raw materials - in the hands of the average worker, a world where all would be equal as workers could be created. Communism in practice, however, took a decidedly repressive shape and was often nearly unrecognizable from the ideal Communism as envisioned by Marx. Regardless, Communism became the central philosophy of dozens of nations across the globe by 1940, including the Soviet Union and China.

Fun facts

• Communism was greatly opposed to organized religion. Marx himself referred to it as the "opiate of the people."
• Communism is not to be confused with socialism. Although both believe in the redistribution of wealth between rich and poor, socialism attempts to do so through the ballot box and general acceptance by the people. Communism on the other hand believes that violent revolution is needed to wrest power from the grasp of the upper classes.
