Civilopedia entry[]
The rise of the merchant class during the Middle Ages encouraged the development of formal communities for traders. Local guilds began to systematize regional commerce, establishing rules and regulations that improved their social and economic status...and their profits. Soon these guilds expanded into larger networks. Some were fueled by civilizations, like the Chola expansion via the markets of the Indian Ocean, while others operated beyond national borders, like the Hanseatic League in Northern Europe. By the 17th century, guilds and leagues had reorganized into private companies that often acted as extensions of their home states. They had their own fleets and soldiers to support their economic endeavors. European nations in particular leveraged these entities (such as the East India Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company) to establish a presence in regions, often with an eye toward colonization.
