Civilopedia entry[]

Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who lived during the fourth century BC. In The Analects, Confucius preaches self-discipline, filial piety and humility, and that one must promote the interests of others over one's own interests. Confucianism has remained a major religion/philosophy throughout Asian history.

Fun Facts[]

The rise of Qin Shi Huang, China's first Emperor, was a low point for Confucianism. Huang, believing Confucian beliefs to have a destabilizing effect on his newly unified kingdom, had the works of the great Chinese scholar burned and hundreds of followers of Confucius executed.

Confucius was likely the first person to enunciate the Golden Rule: "What you do not wish upon yourself, extend not to others."
