A continent is a cohesive region of land tiles that forms a distinct geographical area in Civilization VII and its expansions. These regions are named after and inspired by real-world continents and regions and mythical places.
Mechanics[]
Continents can be directly connected to another continent within the same landmass, entirely surrounded by the Ocean, or both. Additionally, isolated islands are typically assigned to the nearest major continent.
The number of continents in a game depends on the size and type of map chosen. On a standard Continents map, the world will generally contain four continents distributed across two major landmasses and their surrounding islands. Each civilization begins the game on one of these continents, known as its home continent (or Homelands). Other continents, separated by Ocean, are referred to as Distant Lands and become important in the Exploration Age, where overseas expansion and naval exploration become crucial.
Ocean[]
All landmasses and their continents are surrounded by Marine tiles, consisting of:
- Coastal tiles – Shallow water tiles adjacent to land, which can be improved and used for early naval movement.
- Ocean tiles – Deep water tiles beyond the coast, separating continents and restricting movement in the early game.
Unlike land, Ocean tiles cannot be improved or developed — they solely serve as barriers and transit zones between continents. Their accessibility evolves with technological progress:
- Antiquity Age – Ocean tiles are completely inaccessible, preventing early exploration of Distant continents.
- Exploration Age –
Naval Units can enter the Ocean but have limited
Movement and suffer attrition damage if they end their turn there. Researching Shipbuilding in the
Technology tree will remove these penalties, allowing
Land Units to traverse the Ocean as well. - Modern Age – All
Units can freely traverse the Ocean without restrictions.
The Ocean is bordered by Ice tiles, which represent the North and South Poles, at the top and bottom of the world map. These tiles are completely impassable, forming the natural boundaries of the map.
