Civilopedia entry[]
The word “Cossack” comes from the Turkic term “kazak,” meaning “free man.” Cossack refers to a people of the steppe of Ukraine and Russia – a people with their own (often democratic) traditions who live independently of the regimes usually imposed by Russian tsars. The Russian Empire (as well as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) permitted Cossacks to retain their traditional way of life in exchange for military service, and they were renowned for their skill on horseback.
Expansionist Russian designs often clashed with independent-minded Cossack groups, leading to the development of a special class for Cossacks: a “sosloviye,” or “military class." In the field, the Cossacks were a feared element of imperial armies, most notably in the Russian Revolution against the Bolsheviks.
