A cottage is an economic tile improvement that can be built after discovering Pottery. Cottage improvements progressively increase in value, depending on game speed.

Using normal and epic speeds as references:

  • Cottages +1 Coin (Civ4), ~10 pillage value
    • Becomes a Hamlet in 10/15 turns
  • Hamlet +2 Coin (Civ4), ~15 pillage value
    • Becomes a Village in 20/30 turns
  • Village +3 Coin (Civ4), ~20 pillage value
    • Becomes a Town in 40/60 turns
  • Town +4 Coin (Civ4), ~25 pillage value
