Civilopedia entry[]
Crossbows do not have to be complicated. They are bows, laid flat, that have triggers attached to a nock. In this capacity, crossbows can be fired faster than traditional bows. The crossbows of ancient China were likely adapted from hunters’ tools in the highland region of Southeast Asia; the weapons also developed independently in Europe, where they were used by the Gauls. Medieval crossbows could be a little more complex, featuring extremely high resistance (e.g. composite bows or steel bows after the 1300s in Europe) which required mechanical levers, windlass pulleys, or the bowman's full body weight to load. This massive store of force created a weapon with devastating power.
