Civilopedia entry[]
A cruiser originally referred to a mission, not a ship. The mission was a long cruise (not the leisurely kind) on a ship powerful enough to deal with enemy threats. In the late 19th century, cruisers were distinguished as ships that were not entirely ironclad – their lighter design allowed them to travel longer distances (and still utilize wind power). Cruisers could engage enemy capital ships or raid enemy shipping lanes. Famous cruiser models included the HMS Dorsetshire, credited with the crippling of the massive Bismarck battleship.
Cruisers were able to survive even while larger battleships were phased out, and they remain in use today, especially as platforms for missiles.
