Civilopedia entry[]
How does an army compete against horse archers? In the medieval period, this was the operative question for anyone whose land bordered Central Asia. These fast, mobile, ranged troops constantly harassed armored infantry. As gun technology grew in the 16th and 17th centuries, a new and more deadly take on the horse archer rose – the armored pistol-wielding cuirassier. These soldiers were swifter ranged units who could kill from far more than two or three yards away. As lancers declined in importance, the cuirassier's popularity boomed.
Cuirassiers wore breastplates but kept their limbs free to swing a saber or fire a pistol. The breastplate (cuirass) wasn’t powerful enough to stop long arms fire but could defend against slashes, lance thrusts, and smaller-caliber gunfire. Cuirassiers were substitutes for the heavily armored knight, and they quickly assumed a ceremonial function, becoming prominent as royal guards or as part of the style-obsessed Napoleonic legions.
