Civilopedia entry[]
Everyday life changed as the world moved from the pre-industrial era to the industrial. Millions of people migrated from the countryside to the city, following a more rigidly demarcated life, where the home was separated from work (i.e. a farmer or artisan often lived at his place of work, whereas a factory worker does not live in the factory). Gender roles also calcified; while women had previously participated in various small-scale productions, industrial-age women were largely expected to remain in the domestic sphere. Time became regimented: a farmer’s chores were done when they were done, but factory work began and ended with a whistle. Add a growing amount of disposable income to this lifestyle and the modern-day notion of shopping for leisure takes shape. Brands, popular fashion, and advertising evolved during this period, but their presence was felt most heavily in the great department stores. From their origins in England, specialized districts and stores grew up around the world: the Bon Marché in Paris, Wanamaker’s in the USA, Mitsukoshi in Tokyo, etc. All of this led to a mass culture and popular consumption in which we are still enmeshed.
