Civilopedia entry[]
Consider the torpedo. A miniature, unmanned craft that could cruise under the water, out of gun range, and deliver a powerful explosive charge. A simple torpedo posed a threat to even the mightiest dreadnought. Before submarines, torpedoes were launched by small, swift torpedo boats, but these boats were often victims of the destroyer, a lighter craft created for escort duty. Over time, these escorts acquired torpedo tubes and became torpedo boats themselves.
Destroyers excel in versatility, which has kept the model afloat even as heavier battleships have been decommissioned. They could operate alone for humanitarian matters or accompany larger fleets to handle more asymmetrical threats. These threats often came from submarines, so destroyers with depth charges were tasked with eliminating these unseen enemies before they surfaced. Significant destroyers included the French Fantasque, the Japanese Fubuki, and the first destroyer (built in 1893), the British Havock.
