Summary[]

The ninth Economic Advance, Digital Encryption gives power to the rich to escape taxation a governmental control by allowing individuals to encrypt and protect electronic transactions. Through the newly formed Global E-Bank, a virtual currency institution, the rich conduct all purchases electronically increasing their gold, and cash becomes the province of the poor.

In the 21st century, even as automated surveillance monitored the bodies of individuals, technology offered greater freedom for their virtual selves. Heightened encryption techniques meant that by the middle of the century, governments had lost their ability to track funds of any kind. Many small nations collapsed as individuals suddenly appeared to earn nothing. The income tax system collapsed as income became hidden, only to be replaced by steep consumer taxes that penalized the poor.
