Civilopedia entry[]
Violence emerges when words fail – when all attempts at the legitimation of control lose efficacy. Famously, after the Mauryan king Ashoka realized the horrors he had inflicted in conquest, he renounced violence in all of its forms. But Ashoka was an outlier; several South Asian kings not only conquered but devised strategies to legitimate their conquests.
For the Chola, power came alongside religion, poetry, and literature. Conquest and stories of conquest were linked. This was central in the concept of the Digvijaya, the conquest of the directions. Rulers would cast themselves as righteous monarchs – a chakravarti in Buddhist terms – to reframe a very calculated strike as one destined to “turn the wheel” of karma, keeping the world on its progression toward enlightenment.
