Civilopedia entry[]
Today’s career diplomats – shuffled from one post to another every few years while engaging in bureaucratic negotiations in business hotels and conference halls – are a far sight from the diplomats of earlier times. In the past, a foreign posting meant spending an entire lifetime – and often dying – abroad. These diplomats could be at once an adventurer, a spy, a politician, an entrepreneur, a judge, as well as a representative of their home nation. The officials of the VOC – the Dutch East India Company – were expected to make a lifelong commitment to their position, which included having a family with local women where they were stationed (that is, in the early period of colonialism, before the Dutch state took over the administration). In a previous era, one might see travelers such as Marco Polo or Ibn Battuta as diplomats – wandering representatives of a far-off land sent to gather information and stories about places of interest.
