Civilopedia entry[]

A vast gulf exists between a band of skilled warriors and an army. Warriors often compete for personal prestige and honor – combat being a quest to complete the most daring deeds and gain the most personal glory. But military discipline requires one to become part of a unit, sharing that unit’s successes and failures. The principal enemy of combat units was morale more than any one weapon of the enemy. From the Romans against the Gauls to the Qin against the Hsung-Nu, disciplined units proved time and again their ability to take on more numerous, skilled, or physically powerful enemies. The Roman legion was a quintessential example of this – a heavily armored force that maintained its cohesion even under duress, so attacking Gauls and Germans would face a wall of shields pierced only by Roman blades.
