A Discovery (often referred to in-game and on this wiki as a goody hut) represents a forsaken landmark, a group of traveling merchants, or a temporary encampment left behind by wanderers or past explorers that can be found in Civilization VII and its expansions. While they can appear in different visual forms, they are easily recognizable by the purple rays and sparkles rising from their tile.
Mechanics[]
Discoveries are randomly spawned across the map at the start of a new game. They contain a variety of bonuses and take different forms.
Players can collect a Discovery by moving any
Unit onto the tile. Upon doing so, a
Narrative Event will trigger, granting a reward that can include various yields, free Units, or even
Great Works. Most of the time, players are given multiple options for their reward, but some choices may come with a cost, such as paying a certain amount of resources or taking damage.
Strategy[]
Discoveries are one of the most valuable resources in the early game, making them a top priority for any civilization at the start of a new game. Their rewards provide immediate advantages, helping a player's
Capital grow rapidly and snowball into a dominant position. Because they disappear once collected, all players will rush to claim as many as possible before their rivals, as securing multiple Discoveries can provide a significant lead.
Only units belonging to civilizations can acquire Discoveries —
Independent Powers walking over them will leave them untouched. While any unit can collect them, Scouts are the primary choice due to their early-game availability and their role in exploration. Additionally, Scouts have a unique
Search action that allows them to locate Discoveries from double their normal
Sight range, making them the ideal unit for securing these rewards quickly.
The value of Discoveries increases with each passing Age, ensuring that they remain relevant throughout the game. Additionally, some Discoveries will only become accessible from the Exploration Age onward, as deeper Ocean travel is required to reach islands where they spawn. However, while their rewards improve over time, Discoveries are far more impactful in the early game, as they provide a crucial boost to growth and development. Delaying their collection is generally not advisable, as the earlier a player can leverage their benefits, the greater the advantage they can gain.
