Heavy bombers are often wasteful – to destroy one ship, a heavy bomber might need to drop many tons of payload, spilling most of the explosives into the sea. This challenge is compounded by the fact that bombs dropped from a heavy bomber do not fall straight down, but continue in the plane’s trajectory until slowed down by air friction. Divebombers alleviate this challenge by driving straight at the target before deploying their payload.
Pilots of these crafts needed strong nerves – and stomachs. Divebombers were primarily used during the two world wars, but rocketry heralded their decline as rockets offered greater accuracy and speed without risk to a pilot. If the tactical nuclear missile signaled the end of the heavy bomber, the cruise missile signaled the end of the divebomber.
