Civilopedia entry[]
What could be a better way to restore one’s health than at a hot spring? Nestled in the city of Matsuyama, Dōgo Onsen remains one of the oldest indoor hot springs in Japan. Constructed as a public bathhouse in 1894, the three-story onsen was used as a retreat by a variety of people, ranging from average citizens to royalty. The baths are separated by gender, while the Yūshinden is a separate bathhouse reserved for the imperial family located on the east side of the main building. Dōgo Onsen remains popular today, and the baths usually become crowded around early evening.
Two legends surround Dōgo Onsen and the therapeutic powers of its waters. In one, an egret bathed his injured leg until it healed and he could fly away. In another, the Shinto god Sukunabikona was cured of an illness after bathing in the springs, and danced on a stone to prove his renewed strength. Dōgo Onsen still displays this stone today.
Trivia[]
- Dogo Onsen’s wonder quote comes from a haiku written about it by Japanese poet Masaoka Shiki, considered one of the four great haiku masters.
