Civilopedia entry[]
In the wake of the Norman Conquest in 1066, a new regime gained authority over England, and the connection between the crown and the land it controlled was shaken. By 1085, William the Conqueror sought to reforge these ties through a comprehensive survey of his realm to determine who owned what. In part, he wanted to assess how much each holding owed the crown in taxes and knights for his army; but he also gained insight into the total value of his kingdom. The results of this survey were recorded in heavily abbreviated Latin in a manuscript later named the Domesday Book. It remains the most complete public record of this period, capturing the distribution of power and wealth across Anglo-Norman England.
