The HMS Dreadnought was a British ship put to sea in 1906, a massive ironclad warship powered by a steam turbine and carrying a main battery of five 45-caliber naval guns. Revolutionary for its time, the vessel heralded the transition between ships of the line and the battleship. Similar dreadnought-style ships became the most feared vessels of World War I. In addition to their swift engines, dreadnoughts focused on large guns, emphasizing bombardment. Even before the heights of air power, dreadnoughts still had to fear underwater mines and early torpedo boats – simple craft outfitted with deadly torpedoes.
