Needless to say, having a ranged naval unit at this point in the game gives the Byzantine civilization an important advantage in the early game. The only problem is that Byzantium is not considered sea-faring civilization (like England or Carthage), so you can start in a landlocked position. If you do, consider making your top priority to find and settle a coastal city ASAP, so that you could start building Dromons.

Strategy

The Dromon is the only naval ranged unit available right from the Ancient Era. Its spectacular Greek fire attack works the same way as that of the latter Galleas, but looks much cooler.

History

The dromon (from Greek δρόμων, dromōn, i.e. "runner") was a type of galley and the most important warship of the Byzantine navy from the 5th to 12th centuries AD, when they were succeeded by Italian-style galleys. It was developed from the ancient liburnian, which was the mainstay of the Roman navy during the Empire.

Trivia

The dromon is required to get the achievement Greek Fire. It requires you to sink ten Greek ships with a dromon.
