How do you use Dyes? |
Civilopedia entry[]
Dyes have been used since the Neolithic to enliven the human world with color. Our Paleolithic ancestors (and their Neanderthal contemporaries) painted themselves, the walls of their rock shelters, and their gravestones with red ochre. In the Neolithic, textiles entered the mix, providing a broad canvas on which people could put colors, designs, and other forms of artistic expression. Rare dyes were valuable, by virtue of being rare, and one of the most notable dyes was the Mediterranean Tyrian purple, sourced from sea snails. The manufacture of this dye was so difficult that “the purple,” in Roman times, became a euphemism for royal. In Asia, saffron dyes became similarly associated with an office: in this case, religious leaders.
