– Roland Barthes

Civilopedia Entry[]
Shortly after the Eiffel Tower’s construction, a collective of artists including Guy de Maupassant and Alexandre Dumas Jr. decried “the odious shadow of this odious column of bolted metal” which extended across the “city of light.” The Eiffel Tower is a symbol of the modern age, an image of Paris made of salons and cafés as well as industry and steelworks – it is a deep irony that it has come to symbolize the former in recent years. The resistance to the tower was so strong that it was slated to be demolished in 1909 and was only saved by the advent of radio technology (it is still used as an antenna).
The Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889. Soaring over a thousand feet high, it was the tallest structure in the world (until 1930 with the construction of New York's Chrysler Building), and it was assembled from great iron beams that afford it the epithet “la dame de fer,” the lady of iron. French writer Roland Barthes noted that the tower is not a monument – rather, one sees the city as a monument from the tower's perch.
