Civilopedia entry[]
The Assyrian ekallu, or palace, was a complex for both royal residence and political function. They were imposing centers that balanced public and private spaces – they included reception halls and a throne room for visitors, administrative offices for officials, and gardens and dwellings for the king and his family. Buildings were richly decorated according to each space’s intended audience. Statues of creatures like lions and human-animal hybrids flanked gates and entrances, and painted reliefs adorned the walls. In diplomatic spaces, their subjects were royal in nature, such as court scenes and lion hunts, while private spaces focused on mythological or religious sequences.
