Civilopedia entry[]
The Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the residence of the King of Spain, was built over the course of two decades by King Philip II (r. 1556-1598). In addition to its function as an administrative building and royal residence, the site contains a monastery, cathedral, library, and university. The complex highlights the religious nature of Spanish imperial power: the crown and cross united in one glorious building.
When it was built, El Escorial was envisioned as a nexus of Spain’s past, present, and future. It was not only the administrative center of a new religious, mercantile, and expansionist empire, but it was the resting place for its kings and home to relics and important documents. From here, Spain charted a course toward future greatness – and it didn't care who got in the way.
Trivia[]
- El Escorial's wonder quote comes from French jurist Jean Bodin's books, Les Six livres de la République, a treatise on statecraft and government.
