Elite units are those that have won three victories in battle after achieving veteran status, or were produced in a city with a Barracks and a Great Leader. An elite unit learns one of nine special abilities, learning a new one (up to a maximum of six) each time it wins three battles or defeats an enemy unit of equal or greater strength. The only unit able to learn more than six abilities is the Special Forces, which can learn all nine abilities by upgrading a previous elite defensive unit with Leonardo's Workshop, then forming an Army with another Special Forces unit that has the elite offensive abilities.
All units except Settlers, Militia, naval units, and aircraft can achieve elite status.
