Strategy[]
Emile Bell is a highly desirable wonder for any civilization looking to cultivate endeavors with other leaders. Food cannot typically be provided directly to
Cities through endeavors, except in
Towns with a Farmer's Market. Having an additional option to spend
Influence to gain
Food for your most valuable
City — the
Capital — can help players compete even against the
Food advantages of Deity-level AI. Even if no AI is willing to accept or support the endeavor, the
Influence they must spend to reject it slows down their ability to denounce the player or direct harmful espionage against them.
Additionally, AIs do not seem to prioritize this wonder as often, making it more favorable for players to claim. As always, Antiquity Age wonders that provide attribute points offer long-term value, and the diplomatic tree presents more options than most attribute paths.
Civilopedia entry[]
The largest bell in Korea, the Bell of King Seongdeok was cast out of bronze in 771 CE during the Silla period of Korean history. It is a temple bell that was originally installed in Bongdeoksa Temple, where its sound would call monks to prayer and ring out the time of day. A tube at the top of the bell provides a unique reverberation and famously rich sound. This sound is the source of a rather sinister legend – allegedly when the smiths first sought to make a bell for Bongdeoksa, every bell they cast would fail to produce a sound. A monk dreamed that a working bell needed a sacrifice – that a child needed to be cast into the metal. When the bell is struck today, one can easily imagine its ring calls out “emile,” meaning “mother.” This story is likely a later anti-Buddhist invention or a modern ghoulish ghost story.
Today, the bell stands in the National Museum of Gyeongju.
Trivia[]
- The Emile Bell's wonder quote comes from a poem by Joseon kisaeng (courtesan) Hwang Jini.
