Civilopedia entry[]

The emporium was a trading center in the ancient and early medieval world. Many of these sites were permanent markets in settlements along the coast or near major trade routes. Others were seasonal, overlapping with significant regional events: political, social, or religious. Emporia were largely defined by local exports but were also created to attract and centralize imported goods from various origins. For instance, Hatshepsut established Elat as a gateway center of trade to attract materials from the Levant and Arabia that could then be funneled into Egypt. Due to the international flavor of emporia, they were centers of significant cultural exchange, where ideas as well as goods spread to new lands and minds.
