Civilopedia entry[]
Enrico Fermi (1901 - 1954 AD) was a physicist and creator of the world's first nuclear reactor. Born and raised in Italy, Fermi's studies into the nature of the atom and its radioactive principals earned him a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938. The offer of a professor's position brought Fermi and his family across the Atlantic to Columbia University in New York, where he would continue his studies in nuclear fission. But the moment that would change Fermi's career - and world history - took place underneath the football field at the University of Chicago, where Fermi successfully created the first self-sustained nuclear reaction. Fermi's discoveries would make nuclear power - and nuclear weapons - viable for the first time in human history.
Fun facts[]
- While Fermi's discoveries in the manipulation of neutrons were invaluable for the discovery of nuclear fission, they also made it possible for the first time to create unnatural elements beyond what was on the periodic table. If it weren't for the research completed by Fermi, such classics as Ununbium might never have existed.
- Fermi fled to the United States in large part to protect his wife, Laura. As a woman of Jewish descent in a Fascist Italy, Laura's life was in significant danger. Fortunately, after winning the Nobel Prize, Fermi had more than enough money to escape to the New World.
